Audiovoxppc4100

sunglow | 27 March, 2008 04:18

Description
The Audiovox PPC4100 is a Pocket PC phone and looks more like a PDA. Only the stubby antenna on the top-right edge of the device and the small Talk/End buttons below the roomy LCD clue you in to the PPC4100’s phone capabilities. Measuring 4.3 by 2.7 by 0.9 inches and weighing 5.6 ounces, the 4100 is actually slightly smaller than the Treo 600. Still, this form factor takes some getting used to, and many folks may find the PPC4100 too big to use as their primary phone. The construction is solid, but while we appreciate the user-replaceable battery, it sticks out from the back of the device and adds unwanted bulk. The new Pocket PC phone is based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software.

Features
The PPC 4100 features an “unmatched combination of power, function, and form” that makes this “all-in-one” device one of the best values on the market today. The PPC 4100 is a tri-band (850/1800/1900 MHZ) GSM/GPRS Pocket PC phone that combines the capabilities of a PDA with integrated wireless voice and data. It supports international roaming and enhanced coverage and quality services from recent AT&T Wireless network upgrades, according to AT&T. The device runs Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PCs on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64MB of RAM and 64MB of ROM. A built-in SD/MMC expansion slot enables file storage on removable Flash media.

The Windows Mobile 2003 offers several valuable enhancements over previous versions of the operating system, including: “Always-on” Data Connection. Improves application startup. Windows Media Player 9. Supports Windows Media Audio, Video 9 Series with improved play list management and support for Microsoft Plus!, Digital Media Edition. Improved SMS Integration. Inbox will look for the phone number on an incoming short message service (SMS) message in the Contacts database and display the sender’s name if there is a match. An option to call back the sender of an SMS has been added to the SMS notification screen and to Inbox. The SMS account in Inbox is now available when the radio is offline. Phone Mute and Volume Control. New dual volume control separates the phone’s ringer volume and the Pocket PC’s system volume so users can choose their ideal sound level.

Specifications
Key features and specifications of the PPC 4100 Pocket PC phone include: Processor- 400 MHz Intel XScale, Memory- 64MB RAM, 64MB ROM, Display - 3.5 inch TFT LCD, 320×240 resolution (QVGA), 64K colors, Storage - One SD/MMC slot, Communications modes — GPRS Class 10, Tri Band GSM 850/1800/1900, Operating System- Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, with Pocket versions of Microsoft Office applications, Dimensions- 4.29 x 2.69 x .85 in. The battery is a rather large 1480 mAh Lithium Ion pack, responsible for most of the weight of the PPC 4100.it is able to play music for about 7hours, audio quality and volume is great.

Conclusion
The Audiovox PPC 4100 seems to suffer from an identity crisis. It’s short design and lack of non-phone buttons suggest phone centric usage, whilst at the same time it is simply too wide for prolonged to-the-ear use - leaving a wired hands free kit as the best option given the lack of integrated Bluetooth support. It’s not a bad design, but Audiovox doesn’t seem to have decided whether the PPC 4100 should primarily lend itself towards phone or handheld functionality, and as a result it ends up falling inconveniently between two of them.Laptop batteries, laptop battery, new laptop battery
